He was sitting on a mat in the courtyard of his house, happily watching his wife as she
cleaned the rice he had bought. The rice was meant to be cooked for the apple of his eye,
his beloved daughter, as her welcome meal after returning from school where she had
spent many months.

A young man of average height entered with a greeting. He was holding a black nylon bag
in his hand. He handed it to their mother and said,

“Baffa, wallahi, fish was very difficult to find today. I only managed to get this one.
Let us leave the rest until early tomorrow morning before they arrive. I will go back
and see whether more can be found.”

With a face full of brightness and happiness, Baffa replied,

“No problem, Jafar. This one will be enough for now. Tomorrow, I have already told Aliyu
to catch two chickens and slaughter them for her so she can eat as much as she wants.”

Inna shook her head in amazement at Baffa. As always, he could never hide the special
love he had for Anano in his heart. The whole village knew that his love
for her was different from the love he had for his other children.

His full name was Baffa Salisu. He was born and raised in Danja village, a small settlement
under one of the rural areas in Yola State.

Baffa had one wife and five children: four boys and one girl. The girl had been born
as a twin, but her twin sister, Husaina, died before the naming ceremony. Because of
that, she was left with the name Hassana. However, everyone called her
Anano, which means Hassana in Fulfulde.

Anano was the last born and the youngest in the family. She was born after all her
siblings had grown up, and because of that, everyone in the house was fond of her. Her
father especially loved and cherished her deeply because she was the only young girl
in the house, while her brothers had already become grown young men.

Baffa had a reasonable number of animals, and he also owned a farm which he cultivated
every year with his sons.

In the whole village, no one had attended Western school. The people were mainly farmers
and herders, though they also studied Islamic knowledge.

Yusuf was the eldest son. He was patient, but if he started getting angry, it was very
difficult for him to calm down.

Aliyu came after Yusuf. He was quick-tempered and easily angered, especially when someone
offended him. Because of that, people did not usually interfere in his affairs.

Then came Usman. He was also stubborn and quick to quarrel, especially when it came to
Anano, because he believed she was beginning to become rude due to excessive pampering.

Jafar was the calm and patient one among them, especially when it came to Anano. He also
loved her deeply. In fact, although all of them loved her very much, she was closest to
Jafar because he understood her well. He was even the one who took her to the public
square to watch activities before bringing her back home.

Since childhood, Anano had always loved education. It was what she constantly discussed
with her father. Baffa had already made up his mind and promised himself that he would
take her to school.

By the power of Allah, people later came to the village to educate the villagers about
Western education. Baffa was the first person to agree that his daughter should go to
school. After that, a few others also accepted, and preparations for schooling began.
Soon, the children started attending school.

After completing primary school in the village, they moved on to a boarding secondary
school in the main town of Adamawa.

From the time Anano started attending the school, her eyes became more open. This was
especially because Anano had always been sharp-tongued and bold. She knew how to reply
with strong words, and whenever someone spoke to her, she would answer back, no matter
who the person was.

During this holiday, they had stayed at school for a long time. They spent almost five
months there before they began preparing to return home after completing their studies.

Since the day Jafar went and returned with the news that she had completed school and
was coming back, Baffa had been overwhelmed with joy. He began announcing everywhere
that his Anano had completed her studies and would become a great doctor who would
treat people.

The news spread throughout the village, especially when people heard that she had become
a doctor.
