Baqeer Book One
An elderly man sat on the ground, staring at two young girls before him. One of them appeared to be about twenty-two years old, while the younger one was around seventeen.
At one side stood a young man who appeared to be the eldest among them. Their mother was also there, quietly wiping tears from the edge of her wrapper.
The elderly man spoke in a hurt voice.
“Hajara, can you not obey your father just once in this life? Even though we are not wealthy, he has done everything within his power to improve your lives.
“He has done everything a good father should do for his children, simply because he wants your lives to become better.”
With open defiance and no sign of fear, Ummi replied.
“For Allah’s sake, was there nobody else to marry your friend’s son except me? Because his father sees that we are poor, he quietly persuaded you to give him your daughter.
“I swear, I will not marry him.”
Her father lowered his voice and tried to calm her.
“Please, Ummi. Can you not help me and save me from embarrassment? You know that every progress you and your sisters have made came through that man.
“He has done so much for me in this world, even though we are not related by blood. From your education to everything else, he has supported us.
“Your elder brother is now serving the nation, you are in your second year at university, and your younger sister is in her final year of secondary school.
“I swear, Ummi, if I do not wipe away the tears of that good man, then I will be an ungrateful person.”
