About Jamaluddeen Book One

Mallam Adamu was born in Zaria. He lived in Unguwar Iya, inside Zaria city, together
with his wife, Amina, and their only daughter named Jaleelah. However, they called her
Ummy because she was named after Mallam Adamu’s mother.

Jaleelah was an eighteen-year-old girl. She had a reasonable level of Islamic education,
but she did not go far in Western education. She stopped in Primary Five because her
father did not have the means to continue sponsoring her. At the same time, he was
suddenly struck by blindness.

Because of that, Ummy and her mother found themselves in a very difficult situation.
Things became so hard that Ummy started frying and selling wara in front of their house
so they could at least have something to cover their needs and protect their dignity.

Ummy was a well-brought-up girl. She was also beautiful and naturally well-shaped.
Because of that, young men kept appearing from every direction, showing interest in her.
But most of them came with useless and improper talk, so she paid no attention to them.

She had only one suitor, their neighbor, whose name was Bilal. He felt deep pity for
the condition Ummy and her family were living in. Even though he was not wealthy himself,
he worked as a laborer, and many times he would buy a little foodstuff according to his
ability and bring it to Ummy’s family. This always made her parents very happy.

One day, Ummy was sweeping the courtyard when she heard Baba coughing. Mama had gone
out to greet some neighbors, so Ummy quickly dropped the broom and wiped her hands on
the old Ankara wrapper she was wearing.

She hurried into the room and found him lying down, coughing severely. His eyes had
rolled strangely. She squatted in front of him and burst into tears.

“Sorry, Baba. Please take heart. May Allah give you good health.”

He continued coughing without stopping.

She cried helplessly, completely confused, because even the smallest thing easily made
her cry. She rushed out of the room, pulled down her hijab from the rope where it was
hanging, and hurried outside.

At the entrance of the house, she met Mama. As soon as Ummy saw her, she burst into a
fresh round of tears.

“Mama, Baba’s sickness has become worse.”

Immediately, Mama entered the house in panic. She went into the room and found him lying
down, vomiting blood.

At once, Mama broke down crying as she squatted in front of him. Ummy also rushed into
the room, her eyes filled with tears.

“Mama, let us take him to the hospital.”

Mama raised her head, tears flowing from her eyes.

“With what money will we take him to the hospital, Ummy? You know we do not have money.”

Ummy ran out like someone who had lost control. She rushed outside the house, looking
left and right while crying seriously and praying at the same time.

With difficulty, she managed to stop a tricycle rider.

“My father is seriously sick. Please, for the sake of Allah, not because of me, help me
so we can bring him out.”

Without arguing, the tricycle rider came down from the napep and followed her into the
house.

Mama was still sitting beside Baba, crying. When she saw Ummy entering with a man, she
quickly raised her head.

“Mama, let us carry him and take him to the hospital.”

Without any argument, they carried him and brought him out.

Ummy went back inside and entered her room. She brought out a small bundle wrapped in a
black nylon bag. Slowly, she untied the nylon. Inside it was money in five-hundred-naira
notes.

She held the money tightly to her chest and burst into tears.

She cried deeply as she said,

“Forgive me, Ya Bilal. I will use your money.”

She put the money back, tied it again, and quickly came out of the house.

They headed to Gambo Sawaba Hospital. When they arrived, she paid the tricycle rider,
and the nurses immediately took Baba in as an emergency case.

While they were still standing there, a nurse came out holding a paper in her hand.
