Suhail suddenly became extremely upset, and the seriousness in his voice frightened both Hajja and me.

In a loud voice, he asked, “Hajja, how did you enter my room? Or have I given you permission to do that?”

Hajja answered him respectfully.

“Alhaji, I wasn’t the one who arranged the room. Hajiya did.”

He immediately asked, “Which Hajiya?”

“Lilla, your wife. It wasn’t me.”

Suhail was surprised.

He could hardly believe that a girl of Lilla’s age could arrange the room so neatly.

He looked at me carefully before turning around and returning to his room.

After completing what he was doing upstairs, he came downstairs and went directly to the dining area.

He ate his food, but even after he finished, he still hadn’t seen me anywhere.

He went to Hajja and asked, “Where is Lilla?”

Hajja replied, “She’s outside.”

Suhail immediately walked outside to see what I was doing.

Back in our village, I was used to swimming in the river, so I already knew how to swim very well.

I had found the swimming pool in the compound and was happily swimming from one end to another, enjoying myself like a little fish.

Whenever I reached the edge, I would jump back into the water excitedly.

Suhail stood there watching me.

He was amazed by Lilla’s endless energy and mischievous behaviour.

He walked closer to the swimming pool and looked at me.

“You’ve been swimming long enough. Come out. I want to use the pool.”

He turned and went back inside.

A few minutes later, he returned ready to swim, with his phone in his hand.

I looked at him once and quickly turned my face away.

He could clearly see that I had absolutely no intention of leaving the water.

“Didn’t I tell you to come out?” he asked.

I stared directly into his eyes, twisted my mouth and gave him an annoyed look.

“So now you’re going to behave stubbornly with me?” he asked.

I splashed the water playfully and made another funny face at him before disappearing back into the pool.

For a moment, Suhail almost laughed.

But he quickly controlled himself and forced his face to become serious again.

Then I saw him entering the pool.

Immediately, fear entered my heart.

I quickly tried to swim toward the opposite side so that I could escape from him.

But before I got there, he caught me.

I escaped from his grip once, and the two of us struggled around in the water while I laughed.

Eventually, he caught me again.

His rough attempt to discipline me in the pool frightened me badly, and by the time he brought me back out, I was coughing and crying.

He picked up his phone and started pressing some buttons.

From the way he spoke when the call connected, I immediately knew it was Momi.

She asked him where Lilla was.

“She’s here,” Suhail replied. “We’re at the swimming pool.”

Momi sounded very pleased to hear that.

Then I saw him extending the phone toward me.

“Here, speak to Momi.”

I happily collected the phone.

Momi and I exchanged greetings, and she gave me more advice.

Suhail later called Dady as well and handed the phone to me.

I greeted him happily.

After that, Suhail called Mai Gari, and I also greeted him.

Finally, I looked at Suhail.

“Yaya, please, what about my uncle, Umma and Aunty Amina?”

He looked at me impatiently.

“Do you even have their phone numbers?”

I immediately answered, “Yes!”

I hurried to bring out a piece of paper on which Aunty Amina had written her number and Kawu’s number for me.

I handed it to him with a huge smile on my face.

Suhail collected the paper while giving me one of his usual looks.

He dialled the number.

Fortunately, Kawu answered.

“Hello, who is this?”

I was surprised by how politely and warmly Suhail greeted him.

He asked whether Kawu was at home and requested to speak with Umma.

When Umma came to the phone, Suhail greeted her with great respect.

They even had a short conversation.

“Where is our Aunty?” Suhail asked.

Umma was delighted.

They thanked him and eventually connected him with Amina.

Suhail and Amina also greeted each other and chatted for a while.

By then, I was already becoming impatient because I desperately wanted the phone.

Eventually, he handed it to me.

I greeted Umma, Kawu and Amina.

I talked and talked as though I never wanted the conversation to end.

Finally, Suhail collected the phone and ended the call.

By then, a few tears had escaped from my eyes because hearing the voices of my family made me emotional.

Suhail took me into the sitting room and made me sit down.

Pointing at me, he warned:

“Don’t let me see you swimming around the compound dressed improperly again. I’ll buy you proper swimming clothes, and those are what you will use.”

I pushed out my lips and muttered stubbornly:

“Okay, okay, okay. I’m not a baby.”

My response annoyed him.

“Continue behaving like this and you’ll find out what happens in this house.”

He hissed loudly and walked away.

I continued crying afterward.

It wasn’t really because of anything Suhail had done.

Hearing the voices of my family was what had made me emotional.

Hajja tried to comfort me until she eventually became tired.

Later, Suhail came back and firmly ordered me to get properly dressed.

His seriousness immediately made me stop arguing and hurry to my room.

I climbed onto my bed, wrapped myself inside the blanket and eventually fell asleep.

I slept for so long that I didn’t even realize evening had passed.

Suddenly, I heard the door opening.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Suhail standing there.

“Why don’t you listen, Lilla?” he asked.

“I’m responsible for making sure you’re properly brought up, yet you’re sleeping through the evening. You haven’t prayed Asr, Maghrib, and now it is already Isha.”

I jumped down from the bed.

Suhail noticed that I still hadn’t properly prepared myself for the evening.

I became frightened because I thought he was going to punish me again.

“Wallahi, I’ll get ready. Please forgive me, Yaya,” I said with tears in my eyes.

He immediately instructed me to go to the bathroom, clean up and get properly dressed before returning.

I rushed inside.

When I finished, I performed ablution and came back out.

Suhail then made another decision.

“From today, you’ll sleep in my room where I can keep an eye on you. I’ll arrange somewhere separate for you to sleep. Everything you need before bedtime will be handled properly there.”

He shook his head.

“Your toys and everyday clothes can remain in your room. But I’ve seen enough of your trouble for one day.”

He hissed and walked away.

I muttered to myself:

“Always trouble, always shouting. As long as you’re going to buy me the things I want and put me in school, I don’t care.”

After performing my prayers and eating, I returned to playing.

Suhail hardly even noticed what I was doing because he was busy working on his computer.

At about 10:00 p.m., he finally looked at me.

“Get up. Go to my room and sleep.”

His face showed that he wasn’t joking.

“And don’t go back to sleep in your room tonight.”

Without another argument, I gathered my things and went to prepare for bed.

I brushed my teeth, changed into my clean white night clothes and used the perfume Momi had given me.

Then I went into Suhail’s room.

Instead of sleeping where he had originally indicated, I climbed onto a comfortable chair that looked almost like a small bed.

Soon, I fell asleep.

It was around eleven o’clock when Suhail finally finished his work.

He switched everything off and came upstairs to his room.

He found me fast asleep on the chair.

He hissed quietly, then picked up a beautiful new white blanket and covered me with it before climbing onto his bed.

Later in the night, I suddenly began screaming in my sleep.

Suhail woke up in shock.

For a moment, he had even forgotten that someone else was sleeping in his room.

He switched on the light.

To his surprise, I was still completely asleep despite the strange things I was saying.

He came down and tried to wake me.

I still didn’t respond properly.

He sat me upright, but my eyes remained closed while I continued mumbling nonsense in my sleep.

When he tried to make me stand, I immediately lost my balance and fell against him.

He finally startled me awake.

I opened my eyes quickly and immediately began crying.

“Lilla, don’t you have any sense?” he asked sharply. “Don’t you say your prayers before sleeping? What kind of sleep is this?”

I answered sleepily through my tears:

“How can I have sense? I’m only a little girl.”

I could barely stand straight.

The sight almost made him laugh, though he tried to hide it.

My hair was completely scattered, and I was sweating.

“Go and sleep properly,” he said. “And don’t let me hear another sound from you tonight.”

I immediately climbed onto the bed and lay down.

Suhail increased the air conditioner and lay far away on the other side.

Around four in the morning, while deeply asleep, I stretched my legs across the bed without realizing it.

By dawn, Suhail woke up to perform ablution and discovered that I had occupied far more space than I should have.

He stared at me in disbelief, wondering when it had happened.

Annoyed, he moved my legs away and shifted me back toward my side.

The movement woke me.

He entered the bathroom to perform ablution.

When he came out, I also got up and prepared for prayer.

After praying, Suhail remained sitting and reciting his morning adhkar.

I did a little of mine before trying to return to bed.

Before I could settle down, he stopped me.

“No. From now on, you’ll sleep in your own space. You’re too restless when you sleep.”

I complained immediately.

“Yaya, please. The floor is cold.”

He ignored me.

The air conditioner made the room even colder.

Later, after making sure he had fallen asleep again, I quietly climbed back onto the bed.

Thankfully, I didn’t disturb him that time, although I still moved around so much that half of the bedsheet on my side became untidy.

By 8:30 in the morning, Suhail was already fully dressed.

He wore a spotless white jalabiya.

His thick hair had been neatly arranged, and he smelled strongly of expensive perfume.

When he finished getting ready, he woke me.

“Get up. Sleeping time is over. Go and take your bath, and use your own bathroom. Hurry up. I’ll be waiting for you in the dining room.”

I quickly got ready.

When I came downstairs, I was wearing an expensive lace outfit consisting of a blouse and skirt.

I rushed down happily.

Suhail immediately noticed.

“Hmm. So even today you still can’t walk calmly? If I catch you running around this house again, you’ll see.”

I widened my eyes and pushed out my lips.

“Okay. Sorry.”

He ignored my expression and continued eating.

Then he asked:

“Don’t you know how to greet people in the morning? Or don’t people greet each other in your village?”

I quickly crouched respectfully.

“Good morning.”

He barely reacted.

“Go and greet Hajja too. She’s older than you.”

I immediately went to greet her and returned.

“If you’re ready,” Suhail said, “your food is there. Eat quickly. We’re going to a school so I can register you.”

My face immediately brightened.

I was extremely happy when I heard that I would be attending school.

I hurried through breakfast.

Then I returned to my room to get a small scarf matching my clothes.

I also wore a pair of shoes that made a noticeable sound whenever I walked because I liked hearing them.

As soon as I came out, Suhail heard the sound.

He probably thought I was behaving like someone much older than myself.

Without even looking at me, he simply said:

“Let’s go.”

He took me to a beautiful private school close to the house.

It was so near that I could even walk there.

I was placed in SS1 and given a school uniform and the other necessary items.

I was told that classes would begin in about two weeks after the holiday.

By then, I had already spent about one week in Suhail’s house.

Surprisingly, the two of us had started becoming accustomed to each other’s personalities.

One thing I liked about Suhail was that he generally didn’t interfere unnecessarily in what another person was doing.

His attitude was simple: don’t disturb him, and he wouldn’t disturb you.

Sometimes I would sit and tell him stories.

Some of them made him smile, while others earned me another lecture.

He also enrolled me in an Islamiyya school behind our house.

I attended there every evening.

Some days, Suhail even brought me ice cream and snacks.

But whenever I misbehaved, I still knew there would be consequences.

Eventually, regular school resumed.

I reduced my constant playing a little.

Suhail began helping me with my school assignments and sometimes with my Islamiyya work as well.

Momi later came to visit with Zara.

She was clearly delighted to see that I was settling into the house.

A month passed.

By then, I had started noticing some of the normal physical changes that come with growing up.

Because I didn’t understand what was happening, the changes worried me.

One day, while going into Suhail’s room to ask for help with an assignment, I accidentally bumped myself against the door and cried out in pain.

Suhail was working on his laptop.

He immediately looked up.

“What’s wrong with you now, Lilla?”

I tearfully explained that I had noticed painful swelling and didn’t understand why it was happening.

Suhail realized that the changes were simply part of growing up.

He reassured me that I was fine and told me not to panic.

He also began teaching me that as I grew older, I needed to become more conscious of privacy and appropriate boundaries.

I listened carefully and nodded.

Afterward, we returned to the assignment.

That night, I took my bath, got ready for bed and returned to Suhail’s room.

He was already lying down and almost asleep.

But when he looked toward the chair where I normally slept, he saw me sitting there with tears running down my face.

He hissed softly.

“What is it again, Lilla? Go to sleep.”

Then he looked at me again.

“Come here.”

I got up from the chair and walked toward him, still sulking and wiping away my tears…
