Gaskiya Ce Book One Complete Hausa Novel
I was a little girl of about ten years old. I was very fair-skinned, with a beautiful nose, lovely hair and cute pink lips. I was extremely beautiful, almost as though I had personally designed myself. Anyone who saw me could immediately notice my beauty. Sometimes, people were even startled by it.
I was walking through our Fulani village called Lardo in Adamawa State.
I walked calmly, although I occasionally increased my pace because I wanted to get home quickly. Even the way I walked was enough to attract attention.
I continued until I reached the side of the main road in our village.
There were about five expensive-looking vehicles moving in a convoy. At first, I, Asmah, thought perhaps it was the President passing through.
There were security escorts and soldiers in four of the vehicles, protecting the main vehicle.
They kept sounding their horns at me, but because I was in a hurry to get home, I hardly paid attention to them.
I had already reached a place where a few people from our village were gathered near the back of our street.
Suddenly, I felt someone push me and I fell down, though not too hard.
I immediately burst into tears.
The people in the vehicles continued sounding their horns, but I refused to get up.
I lowered my head and thought to myself:
“Wallahi, you people have brought trouble upon yourselves. You have touched the beloved daughter of Kawu Dodon Shanu.”
Before I could finish that thought, an expensive and pleasant fragrance filled the entire place.
The scent was so good that I opened my nostrils wider just to breathe in more of it.
Before I understood what was happening, someone slapped me.
Before I could even raise my head, another slap landed on my face.
I attempted to stand, but I was pushed again and thrown aside.
An intense pain travelled through my entire body.
My body immediately began trembling. My face became red, with the marks of the hand that had slapped me clearly visible.
The force of the slap was so strong that my vision temporarily became blurry.
The villagers standing nearby immediately began exclaiming in shock.
“This man is in serious trouble today!” someone said.
“He has encountered the daughter of Kawu Dodon Shanu. This is trouble!”
Others simply stood watching and laughing.
Within a short time, more people gathered around us.
Throughout everything that had happened, I had not even properly looked at the face of the person who slapped me.
I began screaming loudly before finally raising my eyes toward him.
Had I not been naturally courageous, I might have fainted from shock when I finally saw him.
The man was extraordinarily handsome.
He was neither very fair nor dark-skinned. His skin was smooth and clean, and his appearance was striking.
His hair was thick and beautifully arranged. His lips were small and slightly reddish, giving him an appearance almost like an Indian actor.
Allah had truly blessed him with good looks.
He wore a spotless white traditional outfit that shone brightly. The outfit reached around his knees and fitted his body perfectly.
He was neither too tall nor short, neither skinny nor overweight.
Then he gave a mischievous smile, and that was when I noticed that he even had dimples.
Moments later, however, his face became serious again, as though he had never smiled in his entire life.
Then I remembered something important.
I was the beloved daughter of Kawu Dodon Shanu.
That thought immediately gave me courage.
I stood up, looked at him from head to toe and frowned.
Pointing at myself proudly, I said:
“Do you even know whose daughter I am in this village? Do you know who I am?”
I continued looking at him with confidence and pride.
“Today, I will see who is powerful enough to defend you.”
I immediately spotted a young boy nearby.
“Haladu,” I called. “Go and call my uncle. He is where the cattle are.”
The young man, who appeared to be no older than twenty-seven, was completely amazed.
How could such a small girl be this stubborn?
Even more surprising was the fact that I showed absolutely no fear despite all the soldiers around him.
That was why he decided to remain there. He wanted to see what I would do and who exactly I was boasting about.
One of the soldiers finally spoke.
“Sir, let us leave. She is wasting our time. Or we can deal with the situation right now.”
The young man raised his hand with authority, signalling them to stop.
The soldiers returned to their vehicles and waited for him.
Less than two minutes later, Kawu Dodon Shanu appeared, rushing toward us so quickly that he almost fell.
He desperately wanted to know who had dared to touch me, his beloved youngest niece.
When he arrived and saw the young man and the expensive vehicles lined up nearby, he almost froze.
Still, because of how much he loved me and because of his naturally fearless personality, he stood firmly with his herding stick in his hand.
The moment I saw him, I immediately dropped to the ground and began crying dramatically.
I waved my hands and screamed:
“Uncle! I’m finished! I’m in serious trouble!”
Kawu immediately became worried.
“What happened? What did they do to you?”
I quickly pointed toward the young man.
“There he is!” I cried.
“They have been following me with their vehicles. Uncle, he said I should remove my wrapper and agree to go with him to his farm house. Because I refused, he followed me all the way into the village!”
The crowd immediately erupted in shocked exclamations.
Even the young man himself stared at me in disbelief.
He could not believe that such a small girl was capable of inventing such a serious accusation.
He became so angry that, for a moment, he could not even speak.
Before anyone knew what was happening, Kawu Dodon Shanu grabbed him by the collar.
He was breathing heavily with anger.
It took several people to pull Kawu away from him.
The young man was furious and humiliated that someone had actually grabbed his collar in public.
He immediately entered his vehicle.
The convoy sped deeper into the village.
They did not stop anywhere until they reached the residence of Alhaji Mai Gari, the village head.
Kawu Dodon Shanu grabbed my hand and we followed them.
When we reached the house of the village head, we saw the same vehicles parked outside.
Then we heard people saying:
“It is the village head’s grandson who has arrived.”
Kawu and I looked at each other in confusion.
Kawu’s confidence immediately weakened slightly as we entered the palace.
Inside, we found the young man sitting with the village head.
Most of the soldiers remained outside, although two stood nearby providing security.
The village head, who was known as Sarkin Adalci, warmly greeted Kawu with mutual respect.
Kawu then explained everything I had told him.
The village head became visibly angry.
He immediately turned toward the young man.
“Suhail, is this true?”
The young man, whose name was apparently Suhail, simply nodded his head.
His proud expression made everyone assume he was admitting responsibility.
The village head became even angrier.
He turned toward me.
“Lilla, Kawu’s beloved daughter, is everything you said true?”
I answered confidently:
“It is the truth.”
The village head immediately picked up his phone.
“Suhail, I am going to tell your father what you have been doing.”
Suhail remained silent.
After speaking on the phone for some time, the village head said:
“Yes. That is what happened. Alright, very well.”
Then he turned toward everyone.
“Give me two minutes.”
He stood up and called Kawu, Lilla’s guardian.
I had no idea what they discussed.
Shortly afterward, several elders and important people began arriving.
The palace became crowded.
What confused me most was seeing many members of Kawu’s extended family among them.
Suddenly, we heard the Imam beginning a marriage sermon.
Before I could understand what was happening, we heard the announcement of the marriage between Mubarka Sani, who was me, Lilla, and Suhail Assadiq.
Suhail immediately raised his head in shock.
I collapsed to the floor crying.

I continued crying.
“Uncle, I am finished! Wallahi, I lied about him. I falsely accused him. Oh Allah!”
Suhail, however, remained almost motionless because of his pride.
He could not believe that of all the women in the world, he had suddenly been joined in marriage to a ten-year-old village girl.
Everything became too much for him.
He deeply regretted visiting the village merely to see his grandfather, the village head.
Kawu Dodon Shanu looked at me helplessly.
“Ashsha, ashsha, my dear. It has already happened. There is nothing I can do now. You will have to be patient.”
The village head began advising us and explaining that the decision concerning Suhail had come from his family.
Then the village head’s phone rang.
He quickly answered it.
“Sadiqu, yes, the marriage has been conducted.”
The person on the other end said something before the village head replied:
“Alright. I will give Suhail the phone.”
He handed the phone to Suhail.
“Take it. It is your father.”
Suhail reluctantly collected the phone.
His father spoke with intense anger.
“Suhail, you have disappointed me and disgraced yourself. Is this what your years abroad taught you?”
Before Suhail could respond, his father continued.
“You will remain there and return with your wife. If you come without her, I swear I will not forgive you. And do not mistreat her or speak harshly to her.”
His father continued scolding him from every possible direction.
Despite Suhail’s toughness, tears eventually filled his eyes because of the humiliation and anger he felt.
He hated the girl intensely.
Inside his heart, he decided that he would eventually make her understand the consequences of what she had done.
His father finally instructed him to return the phone to the village head.
The phone was later handed to Kawu as well.
When Kawu finished speaking, he turned toward me.
“Let us go home. You need to prepare so that you can leave with your husband.”
I cried uncontrollably as we returned home.
Kawu explained everything to my mother.
My aunt, my mother and I immediately began crying again.
Eventually, I was taken away from Kawu’s house.
I wore a long Ankara dress because I had even refused to take a bath.
At that age, marriage itself was not what troubled me because I did not truly understand what marriage meant.
What hurt me was being separated from Kawu, my mother, my elder sister Amina and my younger brother Abdul.
The village head instructed the soldiers to open Suhail’s vehicle for me.
Suhail sat silently in the back seat.
I was made to sit beside him.
When I saw him relax into the soft luxury seat, I did the same.
I continued crying quietly.
Then the convoy began the journey toward Abuja.
I cried for some time until sleep eventually overcame me.
