Doctor Yusuf Book One – English Translation

The following morning, at approximately ten o’clock, I dressed elegantly in one of my finest traditional outfits and wore a matching cap.

As for my fragrance, there was no need for anyone to describe it. I knew its scent alone was enough to announce my presence and status wherever I went.

I did not understand why, but my heart was eager to reach the school.

Although our lecture was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., I left home at ten, hoping that arriving there would finally calm my restless heart.

That was exactly what happened.

When I arrived, nobody else was there. The school was completely silent. It was not until approximately ten minutes later that people gradually began arriving.

I remained seated, carefully watching the entrance because I wanted to see Fateema the moment she appeared.

Almost as though someone had instructed me to look in a particular direction, my eyes suddenly settled upon their car.

A smile immediately appeared on my face, although inwardly I was surprised by my own reaction.

Fateema stepped out of the vehicle wearing the same cheerful expression she had carried the previous day. However, she was accompanied by another young woman today.

Our eyes met, and I quickly lowered my head.

I then heard someone greeting me, making me look up again.

It was the other young woman, who appeared to be around Fateema’s age.

After I answered her greeting, she said:

“I said you should come so that we can go inside.”

Before I could answer, I clearly heard Fateema’s voice.

“My brother, shall we go inside?”

I found myself following her without uttering a single word.

From what I observed, the other young woman gave Fateema an unfriendly look. Fateema merely responded with an unconcerned smile.

When we entered the classroom, Fateema and her friend sat down before I took the last available seat beside Fateema.

“Good morning, my brother. I hope you woke up feeling well. How are you coping with the cold weather?” Fateema asked while looking at me.

“I am perfectly fine, Alhamdulillah. I hope you are also well?” I answered.

She smiled before turning towards her friend.

“Maryam, this is my brother Yusuf—the person I told you about yesterday. You didn’t attend yesterday, which was his first day here.”

Maryam also smiled.

“Welcome, our elder brother. Good morning.”

Fateema immediately glared at her.

“What do you mean by ‘our brother’? He is my brother. You should simply call him Fateema’s brother.”

All three of us burst into laughter, including me.

“All right, Fateema’s brother,” Maryam corrected herself.

Shortly afterwards, our lesson teacher entered the classroom, and the lesson began.
