Zuciya Bata Da Kashi Book One Complete Hausa Novel English Translation

She was an elderly woman, about seventy years old. She was fair, beautiful, and graceful. From the first glance, anyone could tell that in her youth, she must have been an exceptional beauty.

Around her sat students, mostly married women, though there were also a few younger ladies among them. Their lesson for that day was centered on the dangers caused by following the desires of the heart.

The old woman, Iya, continued explaining to them while reading evidence from the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

She said, “We must try to purify our hearts and never allow them to overpower us until they lead us to destruction. Truly, the heart can push a person into evil actions.”

She continued, “My Muslim sisters, the heart has no bone. We must try to break and control it whenever it attempts to lead us toward destruction. For Allah’s sake, how many things do our hearts push us to do? Most of the time, they are not good things.”

She added, “Often, you will not feel at peace until you do what the heart wants. Refusing the heart requires strong faith and a serious effort to fight the desires of the soul until one becomes able to bend and control it.”

The Danger of Following the Heart

Iya continued, “Selfish desire is dangerous. Whoever follows it is surely surrounded by hardship. If you are not serious, the heart can lead you to a useless end in this world and the Hereafter.”

She asked, “What then is the benefit of such a life? Why do we not try to direct our hearts toward the path of truth?”

The old woman paused and closed her eyes. Then she bit her lip, as if she had remembered something painful.

Immediately, her composure changed. She slipped into deep emotional pain, silently crying in her heart as she remembered the damage her own heart had caused her.

Never in her life would she forget the disaster her heart had pushed her into. It would never leave her memory. As long as life remained, she would continue living with sadness and regret over the condition her heart had placed her in. She would continue seeking forgiveness from Allah, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

At first, she cried inwardly. But without realizing it, the tears escaped, and she began crying openly, a painful cry that shook the heart. It was the cry of someone carrying deep regret before her Lord.

This was the state old Iya entered whenever she remembered that event.

Not once, not twice, all the students surrounding Iya had seen her in that condition. Whenever they saw her like that, they became worried and tried to know the reason.

But her usual answer was always, “It is a secret between me and my Creator.”

Iya Decides to Reveal Her Secret

That day, however, Iya noticed that her students were more worried than ever. They were deeply disturbed by her condition.

In a soft and pitiful voice, old Iya continued, “Never did I think there would be a day when I would reveal a secret buried in my heart, a secret caused by that same heart.”

She said, “As long as I live, I will never forget what happened. But keeping this secret hidden is no longer the solution. Today, I must tell you what has been buried in my heart, so that my people may wake up and learn from the dangers of following desire.”

She added, “Anyone who wants to pass through this world safely must try to avoid whatever the heart desires if it is not something good.”

Then she said, “My Muslim sisters, let us not forget: the heart has no bone.”

She continued, “How then can a human being, created with blood, flesh, skin, and bones, the most honored of Allah’s creations, lower himself and throw away the dignity Allah gave him by becoming a slave to desire until he disobeys his Creator?”

She said, “Look carefully. Think deeply. Gather the wisdom, understanding, and intelligence Allah has blessed us with, the very thing that separates us from animals, and listen to this story I want to tell you. It is a story of something that happened many years ago.”

Hanifa and Mas’ud

Hanifa was sitting in the entrance area of their house on a small chair. She bent forward, resting her head on her knees, while her eyes were filled with tears threatening to fall.

Her world felt painful because she was about to be separated from the one she loved.

Mas’ud stood beside her with his hands in his trouser pockets, staring at her. He never liked seeing her upset, not even by mistake, let alone seeing her cry.

With a softened heart, he moved closer and knelt in front of her. He raised his hand, intending to lift her face, but then he remembered that such contact was not allowed, so he lowered his hands.

In a gentle voice, he said, “Hanifa, stop crying. This journey I am about to take is not our separation. One year is like one day. If we still have breath in us, we will meet again.”

He continued, “You have worried yourself so much that you are almost making me weak too. You know I do not like seeing you sad. If I had the power, I would not agree to make this journey unless I was going with you. But you know that even traditionally, that is not proper, let alone Islamically.”

He added, “From the beginning, I asked for your permission so that our marriage could be conducted, but you refused. You said you wanted to finish your studies first. This journey is an opportunity for both of us to focus on what is ahead and, by Allah’s will, achieve something good.”

He smiled and said, “By the time I return, you will have completed your studies. Then we will celebrate our wedding, right, Princess?”

His words pleased her because she was certain that Mas’ud truly loved her. What she feared seemed impossible for him to do.

Still, she said, “You understand, right, Mas’ud? It is not that I hate your journey. My only fear is that you may go and meet foreign women, and your mind may change toward me. What if you deceive me? I may remain here waiting for you while you are there with someone else.”

The Promise

Mas’ud interrupted her and said, “Haba, Hanifa. Do not say that. Not even in a dream should you think such a thing will ever happen. You are the only one I love. I will never deceive you. Your love is in my blood. I feel you in every part of me.”

Then he said, “I know women’s hearts are soft and easily troubled. But I also fear that another man may come and take you away from me.”

She shook her head and said, “May Allah forbid it. What man have I ever listened to apart from you? You yourself are my witness. I do not think any other man can attract my attention, even in the future.”

He said playfully, “You are only saying that.”

She replied, “By Allah, it is a promise.”

He said, “Then say that you have taken an oath.”

She said seriously, “By Allah, I have taken it.”

He brought out a white paper and handed it to her with a pen.

He said, “Here. Write the promise you have taken, and I will also write mine.”

She took it with her beautiful hand and wrote:

“I, Hanifa Sa’ad, promise that I have no husband in my life except my beloved Mas’ud Khalil.”

He collected the paper and read it with a smile. Then he also wrote something similar.

After that, he said, “Let me call Ammar so he can come in and sign as a witness. Whoever breaks this promise should face the consequence.”

Hanifa looked at him and said, “So you still doubt me?”

He replied, “No, it is not like that. It is just for witness.”

She glared at him and said, “Go on with your witness, then.”

They both laughed at the same time.

Ammar Joins Them

They spent a long time reassuring each other of their love and repeating the promise they had made.

Around 10:30 p.m., Ammar looked into the entrance area, glaring at his friend.

He said, “You shameless person, you left me outside in the cold while you were enjoying conversation here. Did you forget that you left someone outside? Though I should have known. Once you two meet, you forget everyone else except yourselves.”

Mas’ud looked at him and said, “Say the truth. By Allah, I forgot we came together. But it is your fault. I told you to come in, but you refused. You said you would come later. So now that you have suffered outside, you entered.”

Ammar turned to Hanifa and said, “Madam, are we not talking?”

Mas’ud said, “He will soon leave and leave me with you.”

Hanifa smiled and said, “But you did not greet us properly. You came in and started scolding someone.”

Ammar said, “So you do not see his fault for leaving me outside? It is my own fault you see?”

Hanifa replied, “You know love is love, but self-love comes first.”

Ammar said, “Alright, I will take revenge.”

She said, “Please be patient, but do not scold him again.”

They chatted for a while. Then Mas’ud entrusted his beloved to his close friend, Ammar. Ammar promised to care for her with honesty.

Mas’ud told Hanifa that whenever she needed anything, she should send for Ammar and inform him.

She only nodded, but deep inside, she knew that was not how she had been raised. She understood that doing such a thing could reduce her dignity in Mas’ud’s eyes and even in the eyes of his friend.

Mas’ud said that once he arrived safely, he would contact her through Ammar, and whenever he needed to speak with her, he would also do so through Ammar.

Before leaving, he brought out the paper containing their promise and asked Ammar to sign as a witness. Ammar teased them for a while before finally signing it.

If it were up to Mas’ud, Hanifa would have escorted him to the airport the next day. But he knew that was impossible because of how strict her father was. He also knew Hanifa’s character; she was modest and shy, and she would never go. So he accepted it, and they said goodbye.

Hanifa’s Sleepless Night

Around midnight, Hanifa could not sleep. Her mind was only on her beloved.

This journey he was about to take felt to her as if they had already separated forever.

Slowly, her thoughts returned to the beginning of their meeting, about one year earlier.
