Her whole body was shaking. Her heart was burning with fear and shock. She was completely terrified.

In anger, Salkhan began removing his belt. When she saw what he was doing, she tried to push him away. Luckily, he moved aside for a moment, and she quickly tried to run toward the door.

But before she could go far, he took only two steps and dragged her back. Pain shot through her arm, and she screamed. He did not care. He knew no one would hear them, and his anger had already taken over him.

He forced her down despite her struggle and fear. She kept crying and begging him to stop, but he ignored her pleas. Her pain was too much for words. She called his name, begged him by Allah, and pleaded with him not to destroy her life.

“Please, Brother Salkhan, have mercy on me. I will greet you from now on. I will never disobey you again. Please do not ruin my life. Please, I beg you by Allah and by the honor of your parents. Do not kill me,” she cried.

But he was no longer listening. His anger and lack of control blinded him completely. That day became one of the darkest moments of Nanah’s life.

After violating her, he left her there without concern and went to his own room. He entered the bathroom and stood under hot water, trying to wash away the heat of his anger. Instead of feeling remorse, he hissed and muttered bitterly to himself.

Later, he put on a jalabiya and lay down on his bed. Fever gripped him, and within a short time, sleep overtook him.

Nanah’s Pain

As for Nanah, she remained where she was for almost two hours without moving. It was nearly three hours before she began to open her heavy eyes slowly.

Everything that had happened came rushing back to her mind. A bitter cry burst out of her. Her whole body ached, and her heart felt as if it had been torn apart.

When she realized the full weight of what had happened, fresh fear entered her heart. She felt broken, ashamed, and deeply wounded.

“Allah is sufficient for me against you, cruel man. May Allah judge between us. I hate you, Salkhan. I hate everything connected to you,” she cried.

Then she remembered her mother.

“It was Ammih who caused this for me. She chose herself and her own interest over what I wanted. What kind of life is this? Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Allah, make a way out for me. Allah, take my soul if that is better for me.”

She cried with deep pain for a long time before trying to stand. But her body failed her. She crawled toward the bathroom, not even knowing what to do.

Her tears became stronger.

“He has ruined me. He has taken something from me by force. I hate you, Salkhan,” she said in pain.

She filled warm water and tried to bathe, but the pain made her cry out again. Tears continued falling down her cheeks as she stood there, pitying herself.

After some time, she forced herself to bathe and came out. Her body was still shaking as she wore a long dress. Then she sat and began praying the missed prayers of Zuhr and Asr. She prayed while crying, then continued making dua until Maghrib was called.

Salkhan Leaves the House

On Salkhan’s side, he woke up around Maghrib. The fever had reduced, but his head was still aching.

He went to the bathroom, performed ablution, and prayed the prayers he had missed. After Isha, he took his car key and left the house without even looking toward Nanah’s door.

He went straight to the hospital, saw a doctor, and collected medicine. After that, he stopped at an expensive food spot, bought pizza, and returned home.

Nanah, on the other hand, could barely rise from bed. Fever had gripped her. Her body trembled under the blanket, and her head and lower stomach hurt badly.

She did not understand what was happening to her. She only curled herself up and cried again with a broken heart.

Her hatred for Salkhan and her mother grew stronger inside her. She cried bitterly until sleep finally carried her away.

The Morning After

She did not wake up until around dawn. Her body still hurt, though her head had eased a little. With difficulty, she entered the bathroom, bathed again, warmed her body slightly, and came out feeling a little better.

She prayed, but everything that had happened returned to her mind again, and tears escaped her. She cried for a long time before picking up the Qur’an and beginning to recite.

By Allah’s mercy, after reciting, she felt a little peace in her heart. She returned the Qur’an to its place and lay down, tears quietly falling from the corners of her eyes until sleep took over again.

Around 11 a.m., she woke up suddenly and recited words of remembrance. Her body still hurt, but she was now very hungry. It was then she remembered that she had not eaten since the lunch she had the previous day.

She hissed in anger and was about to leave when she saw her phone. She picked it up and saw many missed calls and messages from Mainah. They were more than twenty.

She hissed, plugged the phone in to charge, and went downstairs. She only prepared tea and toasted two slices of bread. As she walked weakly, she looked like someone carrying deep pain inside her.

Suddenly, she bumped into someone. He too had been walking while pressing his phone and had not noticed her.

Nanah’s eyes widened in fear. The tea had spilled on Salkhan. She stepped back, terrified, while her heart turned with fear.

He hissed loudly. He did not even look at her. He only looked at where the tea had spilled on him, then went upstairs.

Fresh pain entered Nanah’s heart. She entered the kitchen, brought what she needed to clean the place, and returned. She picked the broken pieces of the cup and plate and threw them into the trash bin. Then she mopped the floor properly while crying.

When she returned to the kitchen, she prepared only tea and took it upstairs. She placed it on the bedside table, fell onto the bed, and continued crying bitterly.

Salkhan’s Anger

On Salkhan’s side, his heart was boiling. He went straight to the bathroom, removed his clothes, and poured hot water over himself. From time to time, he hit the wall whenever he remembered how the tea had spilled on him.

When his anger rose again, he came out with only a towel tied around his waist and went toward the place where he kept his drugs. He picked them up and smiled bitterly.

“She escaped because of you,” he said.

He sat there and used the drugs until sleep eventually overtook him.

Mainah Calls Nanah

Nanah kept crying until her heart burned with pain. When she turned, she saw her phone light up. With difficulty, she stretched her hand and picked it up.

The missed calls and messages from Mainah had increased again. She did not even read them. She deleted everything.

Just then, his call came in again. She hissed and said, “I hate you. By Allah, I hate every man.”

She rejected the call.

Mainah became deeply worried because he knew Nanah would never normally reject his call. He called again.

This time, she answered but said nothing.

Mainah began praising her softly, calling her his queen and speaking to her in a way that usually made her smile.

But hearing his voice only broke her more, and she burst into tears.

In panic, he said, “Nanah, please, what is happening? I have never heard you like this before. You are scaring me. What is going on?”

She could not speak because crying had taken over her. She ended the call.

He waited for about ten minutes before calling again. She answered, and this time he kept comforting her. By Allah’s will, he managed to calm her down. He continued talking to her until she even laughed a little.

He later told her that the school had gone on strike. Her eyes widened.

“Are you serious?” she asked.

He said yes, and then told her he would travel early the next morning.

She felt sad when she heard that. They talked for a long time before ending the call.

Ammih Calls Nanah

Nanah was sitting on her prayer mat after Isha when her phone rang. When she saw that it was Ammih calling, she refused to answer. In her heart, she believed that her mother was the cause of everything she was suffering.

She had been forced into a marriage of hatred. Her heart did not love Salkhan at all, and she did not even want to open her eyes and see herself inside his house.

The phone rang again, pulling her out of her thoughts. She watched it until it was almost about to stop ringing before she answered.

She greeted Ammih. Ammih answered and asked where she had kept her phone, because she had been calling without getting a response.

Nanah did not know what to say, so she lied that she had misplaced the phone.

Ammih asked, “Are you people alright? Is there any problem? Where is Salkhan? Will he not bring you, even at night, so we can see you?”

Nanah was surprised by her mother’s attitude but said nothing until Ammih finished speaking.

When the silence became too long, Ammih asked, “Are you there?”

With effort, Nanah said, “Yes. I am not feeling well, but I will come, insha Allah.”

Ammih asked, “Subhanallah. What is wrong with you? Did he take you to the hospital?”

Nanah replied, “Yes, Ammih. It is only headache. I was given medicine.”

Ammih said, “Alright. May Allah heal you. If I get the chance, I will also come and check on you.”

Nanah only said, “Okay,” and the call ended.

Weeks Pass

Three weeks passed after the incident. Mainah and Nanah spoke every day on the phone. Their closeness grew stronger. Every day, she would ask him whether the school strike had been called off, and he would laugh and tell her that he too was eager to return and see her.

As for Salkhan, she had neither seen nor heard from him since the day everything happened. She avoided anything that would bring them together. Her mind became calmer because she did not go anywhere. She only spoke with Teemah, Moon, and Mainah on the phone. Ammih also called from time to time to ask about her health.

Two weeks later, on a Saturday, Nanah was lying down when her phone rang. She almost refused to answer, but when she saw Ammih’s number, she picked it up with a frown.

After greeting her, Ammih said, “Come and open the door for me. I am downstairs.”

Nanah’s eyes widened as if her mother could see her. Her heart beat fast before she stood, wore a long hijab, and went downstairs to open the door.

She stared at her mother for a moment before saying, “Bismillah, Ammih.”

Ammih entered and sat on a chair. Nanah returned, squatted, and greeted her properly. Ammih asked about her health. Nanah answered, and silence followed.

After a while, Nanah went into the kitchen. She did not know what to bring for her mother, so she brought drinks and water.

When Ammih noticed that Salkhan had not appeared, she asked, “Is Salkhan not around?”

Nanah did not know what to say, but with courage, she replied, “He went out.”

Ammih stayed for a little while, but when Salkhan did not return, she said she was leaving.

Nanah escorted her to the door. As she returned and was about to go to her room, she heard music playing. That confirmed that Salkhan was actually around.

She hissed, glared toward the direction of the sound, and went to her room.

Nanah Returns to School

Two months later, Nanah was happy because school had resumed, and she had lectures that day.

She wore a long black dress decorated with stones. She looked very beautiful. After preparing, she left the house.

She hissed and said, “By Allah, if not because I said I would go and check on you, I would not go anywhere. Before entering school, I will stop by and greet her, then leave.”

She went to Ammih’s house first.

But as soon as she stepped out of the car, a sudden headache and dizziness struck her. With difficulty, she entered the sitting room and met Ammih sitting with her close friend.

Nanah squatted and greeted them while holding her head. She tried to stand, but from that moment, she lost consciousness.

In panic, Ammih called their family doctor. She and her friend placed Nanah on a three-seater sofa before the doctor arrived.

When the doctor arrived, he began checking her. After some examinations, he decided to do a pregnancy test immediately.

By Allah’s will, the result came out: she was eight weeks pregnant.

Ammih became extremely happy, almost unable to control her joy. She even gave the doctor a gift. At least now, she believed her dream was close to becoming reality.

She began calling Salkhan to give him the good news, but he did not answer, even after several missed calls. He was with Zaid and the others, watching the phone ring without picking it up.

Nanah Learns the Truth

It was around late afternoon before Nanah woke up. She woke with words of remembrance and felt a deep hunger.

Ammih sat beside her, while Nanah looked at her with many questions in her eyes.

Ammih quickly helped her sit up and kept smiling at her, which confused Nanah even more.

Ammih comforted her and asked what was hurting her. Nanah shook her head, saying nothing was wrong. With difficulty, she said she wanted tea.

Ammih quickly stood and called Hajara, the house help, to bring tea.

Not long after, Hajara came in with a tray containing tea, jollof rice, and coleslaw. As soon as Nanah saw the food, she felt satisfied. She ate very well and drank the tea. Even she was surprised by how much she ate.

After eating, she stood and went to the bathroom to perform ablution. When she came out, she suddenly remembered her lectures.

In panic, she asked Ammih what time it was.

Ammih checked her phone and said, “4:15.”

Nanah’s eyes widened. She placed her hand on her chest and said, “I am finished. My lecture has passed. Ammih, what happened?”

She became very disturbed.

Ammih said, “Be careful with your condition. You know you are no longer alone.”

Nanah did not understand what Ammih meant. She quickly picked up her bag and veil, intending to leave.

Ammih shouted at her, “Do you not know that you are pregnant? Stop rushing around.”

Nanah froze. She could neither move forward nor backward. It felt as if everything inside her had stopped.

Then she collapsed to the floor and burst into painful tears.

“Oh Allah, I am finished. Salkhan has ruined me. By Allah, I will not keep this pregnancy. What will I do with the child of someone I do not love? Someone I do not even want to see? Someone I was forced to marry. I have never loved him, not even for a moment.”

She cried bitterly, pitying herself.

“By Allah, I will not carry his child,” she said.

Ammih shouted at her, “Have you lost your mind? Are you not married to him? Is he not your husband? By Allah, I swear to you, if anything happens to this pregnancy, Nanah, I will curse you and leave you to the world. Do not dare let anything happen to this child.”

Ammih spoke in anger.

Nanah cried and said, “Ammih, why do you love Salkhan more than me? Why do you always deny me my right?”

She could not continue speaking. She stood, picked up her handbag, and left.

Nanah Runs to Mainah

As soon as Nanah entered her car, she called Mainah. When he picked up, she burst into tears and asked,

“Where are you?”

Frightened, he replied, “School.”

She cried, “Meet me by the roadside.”

She drove quickly. Allah protected her until she saw him by the road. She parked.

He approached her and, seeing her condition, said he would drive.

That was what happened. From the moment he entered the car, she kept crying and refused to speak. Seeing that people were around, he drove the car to his house in a new area behind the town.

He came down, opened the gate, drove inside, and opened the door for her.

She came out and hugged him. It was the first time in her life that she had hugged him. He also held her closely, rubbing her back gently.

In a soft voice, he said, “Nanah, you know I hate seeing you upset. You know your sadness affects me. What is happening?”

She raised her head, tears falling from her eyes, and said,

“Salkhan ruined my life. He violated me, and now I am pregnant. I know you will no longer marry me.”

Mainah’s eyes widened.

“How did this happen, Nanah? You did not tell me. Nanah, I will not run away from you. I am with you always. This will not stop us from getting married once you leave his house.”

He then suggested that they could find a way to remove the pregnancy.

Nanah stopped crying immediately and looked directly into his eyes while tears continued falling.

She said, “Ammih said she will curse me if I do that. I do not understand why Ammih treats me this way.”

He asked how Ammih found out, and she explained everything that had happened.

Mainah was surprised. He hugged her and said, “I love you, Nanah.”

He wiped away her tears and led her into the house, trying to comfort her. But as her pain and confusion grew, the situation around her became even more complicated.
