A Daren Aurena Book One Complete Hausa Novel English Translation
On a Friday around four o’clock in the evening, there was a medium-sized house newly painted until it shone brightly and attracted attention. Children and young people were pushing themselves into the house, trying to enter. When I saw that they might leave me standing outside, I followed a group of young women heading toward the entrance, and we entered together.
The compound was filled with people, and noise rose everywhere as if a fight had broken out. On one side, a young woman was fuming, puffing her cheeks, pushing her mouth forward, and showing clear anger.
I heard a woman’s voice saying, “I swear, if I allow Zulaima to leave this house for marriage without my money being paid, then my mother Talatu did not give birth to me. I have said it, and by Allah, even if the marriage has already been conducted and they come to take the bride, I will hold her here. She will not go anywhere until my money is paid.”
As soon as she finished speaking, an elderly fair-skinned woman began her own speech.
“Today, I, Salamatu, daughter of Sule, granddaughter of Salmai, have seen enough. What kind of disrespect is this? Every woman now carries her legs into this house with useless claims. If it is because of something belonging to someone’s father, why did no one speak earlier? Why wait until her wedding night before bringing empty accusations?”
She continued, “I swear by the Lord, any grown woman who comes again with such nonsense, I will make Maradiyya sit on her. I have had enough.”
The Fight Begins
As the old woman finished speaking, the other woman grabbed the young bride by the neck, and they began struggling.
Before anyone could understand what was happening, the house turned upside down with fighting. Most of the people involved in the argument gathered and started beating the young woman.
The fair old woman screamed loudly and began calling for help when she saw about five grown women beating her granddaughter alone.
Then a heavy-bodied woman hurried toward the scene. As soon as she arrived, she did not waste time. She turned around, made a strong jump, and landed directly on the women who were fighting.
Luckily for her, she crushed two of them under her weight and sat on them like a woman in a traditional spirit-dance scene.
The scream those women released matched the loud shouts of the spectators, who began cheering and shouting, “Giwah! Giwa! Giwa!”
Their faces were full of excitement because the fight had become entertaining to them. The women crushed under Maradiyya, who was nicknamed Giwa, began crying in pain because they could hardly breathe properly.
With difficulty, Maradiyya rolled off them and came down to the ground. Then she moved toward the others who were still beating the young girl.
When she reached them, she raised her large hand and struck one of the women who was beating the girl as if she had found a punching bag. The woman bent backward and fell to the ground, holding her back in pain.
Maradiyya continued dealing with the women with all her strength. Whenever she managed to bring one down, she would sit on her and overpower her. By the time she finished, the women were exhausted, while she stood breathing heavily like a tired bull.
The spectators continued shouting and cheering, clearly entertained by how Maradiyya had scattered the women.
The Police Arrive
The fair old woman held the hand of the young girl who had been beaten and helped her stand. The girl limped weakly.
Before they could do anything else, they heard the sound of a police siren spreading through the area. Within moments, female police officers entered the compound confidently.
Behind them came a thin, rough-looking man dressed in clothes that looked badly worn and untidy.
Before anyone could speak, Malam Auwalu pointed at the young woman and said, “Officer, that is the thief over there. And arrest those women lying on the ground too, because they were part of the group that climbed over my wall. Arrest all of them.”
The young woman suddenly screamed in shock and burst into tears.
She cried, “I am finished. I, Zulai, what kind of disaster has caught me on my wedding night? If only Zainabu had not told me to go and see for myself, even if I were offered thousands, I would not go to the police station on my wedding night.”
The house erupted again with shouting and confusion. Everyone insisted that no one had the right to take Zulai to the station on her wedding night.
When the police became tired of the noise, one of the officers outside raised his voice and threatened them. Fear immediately entered everyone’s heart.
The female officer adjusted her weapon as if she was ready to act. At once, Zulai and the other women Auwalu had pointed out took themselves to the police officer, trembling in fear.
They were led outside without even being allowed to wear their hijabs properly. They were loaded into the vehicle, while the remaining officers and Auwalu also climbed in.
Zulai’s Plan
Zulai began crying loudly again. Her heart was troubled because she was thinking of how she would go to the hospital that night to check on what she had secretly kept there. She was certain she could not allow them to reach the station. She needed to get to the hospital that same night, and immediately.
Suddenly, she stopped crying. She had thought of something that calmed her heart.
She turned and looked at their neighbors who had fought with her. Each of them looked frightened and worried. Fear was clear in their eyes.
Slowly, Zulai lowered her head and did not raise it for almost two minutes.
Then she suddenly released a terrifying scream that shook the entire road, especially because the road passed through farm areas.
The driver immediately stepped on the brake and began looking around. Before he could do anything, Zulai screamed again, even louder than the first time.
In fear, the police officers and Auwalu jumped out of the vehicle, trembling. The women inside the vehicle squeezed themselves together and held one another in terror.
Quickly, Zulai stood up. Then she jumped down from the vehicle with such force that dust rose from the ground.
Before Auwalu and the police could understand what was happening, Zulai shook her body violently until her headscarf fell off and her long black hair covered her face.
She bent her fingers, shook her body again, and threw her hair backward. Immediately, Auwalu fell to the ground in fear, shaking uncontrollably.
The police officers also became frightened when they saw Zulai’s eyes turn strangely upward.
With a shaky movement and a strange voice, Zulai began moving toward Auwalu and the officers.
She said, “You human beings, disrespectful people who do not know the value of women, know that today your end has come. We must destroy you and punish you for arresting our beloved one without any crime, only because this mosquito-looking man bribed you with five hundred naira.”
She moved closer to Auwalu, who was lying on the ground with his hands raised in surrender, crying like a little child.
She said, “Auwalu, son of Malam Barau, grandson of Hassula, daughter of Auduwa, know that today we must break your bones into pieces because there is no flesh on your body, only bones covered with skin like a skeleton.”
Auwalu cried out, begging for his life.
“Peace be upon you, hidden beings of wonder. Look at the greatness of the Lord and spare my life. By Allah, I follow Allah, His Messenger, and I follow you too. I agree to remain behind your beloved one. Please have mercy and leave me alive. You can see I have no flesh on my body, only bones. Even the bones are very hard like iron. It is hereditary from my ancestors. They were all thin and dry like sticks, with big heads like pots.”
Zulai almost lost control because of the scene, but she held herself. She looked at the officers and the women, all trembling and wide-eyed with fear. They now believed she was a spirit, not a human being, because her appearance had changed so quickly.
Chapter Two
Zulai almost burst into laughter when she saw how the brave police officers of the village had become terrified because of her fake spirit act.
With great effort, she controlled herself, rolled her eyes upward again, and began speaking in a frightening voice.
“You human beings! I want you to listen carefully to what I will tell you. All of you, men and women, must stand up and begin sweeping this road with your hands. And I do not permit any passerby to hear what happened here.”
She continued, “If you allow anyone to hear this story, we will come and take someone far beyond the world and make that person guard our animals. And anyone who ever interferes with our beloved one again, even if he is the one owing her money, we will erase that person from the earth.”
She added, “We are in a hurry now. We are going to the end of the world to check on our newborn child. If we return in twenty minutes and find that you have not finished, we will gather all of you and take you to our own world.”
After saying this, she began walking away, twisting her body like a snake and laughing in a frightening voice.
Allah had blessed Zulai with a sharp, sweet voice that could sound like a bird’s cry when she screamed.
Zulai Escapes to the Hospital
Zulai released a deep sigh when she turned around a corner. She began breathing heavily and wiping away the sweat that had covered her.
Tears were flowing from her large fair eyes because of how much she had forced them to roll upward.
She used her slim hand to gather her long black hair and tied it behind her. Then she burst into laughter as she remembered how Auwalu had become so frightened and how the officers had trembled.
She also remembered how Rasulu had widened her small eyes in fear, trying to speak but unable to. The same Rasulu who had been boasting and fighting in their house because she claimed Zulai owed her money was now too frightened to talk.
Quickly, Zulai used the fabric of her dress as a veil and began walking fast. Her feet were decorated with red henna, and as she moved, she kept thinking about the secret thing she had kept at the hospital in town.
After about fifteen minutes of walking, she reached the small hospital. Many people were gathered outside, carrying out their businesses and making noise. No one seemed to care that it was a hospital where sick people needed quiet.
Quickly, she pulled her veil closer to her face so no one would recognize her and hurried into the hospital.
She did not stop anywhere until she reached the male ward.
The room smelled unpleasant, and the caregivers were talking loudly without concern. She did not stop to pay attention to anyone. She moved quickly without giving anyone the chance to see her face.
When she reached the end of the room, she opened a loose curtain that had been used to separate a small area from the rest of the patients. Then she stopped and leaned against the wall, trying to catch her breath.
She stood there for about three minutes before slowly moving toward the bed.
She stood beside it and bent down close to the face of a handsome young foreign-looking man lying there with his eyes closed, clearly asleep.
