A kind man directed them to a cheap lodging house where travellers could spend the night.
Fortunately, the lodging house was not far from the motor station, so they went there immediately.
When they arrived, Baba paid fifty naira for each person to spend the night.
Innar Rahin Cares for Her Newborn Baby
Innar Rahin was more exhausted than everyone else, especially because she had only recently given birth.
Both she and her newborn baby badly needed a bath before they could sleep comfortably. The baby was also becoming restless and continued making soft crying sounds.
Inside the lodging house, Innar Rahin bought some hot water and began bathing her baby.
After cleaning and dressing the child, she prepared to take her own bath.
However, she first had to wash the bathroom before she could use it because it was extremely dirty and unpleasant.
Baba’s Unexpected Kindness
When Innar Rahin finished bathing, she was surprised to find a cup of very strong tea and some bread waiting for her.
Baba had bought them and left them there for her.
She said nothing, but her heart was filled with surprise as she drank the tea, ate the bread and finally lay down to sleep.
The following morning, she bought more hot water so that she and her baby could bathe again.
Baba bought rice cakes for everyone from one of the vendors inside the lodging house. From what Innar Rahin observed, almost everything a traveller might need was available for sale there.
Once again, Baba bought a cup of strong tea especially for her.
His unusual behaviour continued to confuse her, but she kept her thoughts to herself and remained silent.
Baba Searches for News About Rahin
Baba left the lodging house without even saying goodbye to them.
He feared that Inna might begin questioning him about Rahin, and he was not prepared to answer her.
His first destination was the motor station, where he hoped to receive some information concerning Rahin’s disappearance.
Unfortunately, he found no news about her.
After leaving the station, Baba began searching for a permanent house with a man named Malam Habu.
They had met at the station, and they immediately became comfortable with one another.
The Search for a Permanent Home
Baba and Malam Habu searched through different parts of the city, hoping to find a suitable house.
However, they could not find any property available for purchase. Every house they inspected was only being offered for rent.
Baba preferred to buy a house instead of renting one because he believed that once a person secured a permanent place to live, every other problem would become easier to handle.
They continued searching until evening, but as sunset approached, they had no choice except to stop and continue the search the following day.
Baba Fears Inna’s Reaction
As Baba returned to the lodging house, his heart pounded heavily inside his chest.
He could not stop thinking about what answer he would give Inna when she asked about Rahin.
How would she react when he told her that he had found no information?
Would she believe whatever explanation he gave her?
Or would she accuse him of having played a role in Rahin’s disappearance?
